Della Joy

Della Joy should be chosen by KISS a Hero due to the simplicity that.. She is one. She is my mother; the woman who has single handedly raised two children. One of her two children suffers from Cerebral Palsy, a daily, life long struggle. The other child (myself) is merely just a college student. She pays my tuition, lets me live with her with off charge, and still does my laundry. Recently, she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. As usual, she kept quiet, handled it by herself, and tried not to worry a soul. Though this became impossible, as the cancer claimed both her breasts in the form of a mastectomy. The cancer was removed from her body in this way, but the chemotherapy was still a requirement. A long, nauseating process for her. When Della isn't taking care of her children, her home, or going to chemotherapy, she's working. She is a teacher's aid at the Arrowhead Elementary, working in the Special Education Preschool. This is a job certainly not for everyone, but she does great good there, and it's rewarding work. When I was a child, and asked my mother what she wanted to do (if she always wanted to be a teacher,) she'd tell me this: she wanted to join the Peace Corps when we grew up. She wanted to travel and help people. Though with time, and her son's dysfunction, she has realized this is a dream she will probably never be able to accomplish. She has family that takes priority and needs her here, and that's just how it is. So, in summary, my mother is a hero. My hero, our hero. I believe she deserved to be chosen for KISS a Hero, and this is my nomination.

Signed,
Casey Joy
